Interview with Ron Garney, artist on Skaar
Ron Garney is the artist on the upcoming Skaar, Son of Hulk comic
and he was nice enough to answer some questions. Also, take a look
at a rough sketch of Skaar. He doesn't look too happy, needless
to say.
IH:EOD : So Ron, you’ve been away from the Hulk
family for awhile, what have you been up to?
RG: In the last ten years? Hmm getting into, then
getting out of, and then staying out of, trouble.
IH:EOD : Your style has changed since you were on the Hulk book,
especially noticeable on the Wolverine book right now. What brought
about the change?
RG: I'm not sure really--just evolution I suppose, or de-evolution
depending on the way you look at it. The biggest change on WOLVERINE
happened because we're shooting straight from my pencil work. So
Ive adjusted the technique accordingly so fans can see the work
in its purest form.
IH:EOD : Will you be drawing the same way for the Skaar book?<
RG: Yes.
IH:EOD : How did you get involved with the Skaar book?
RG: Joe Quesada called and asked if it would be something I was
interested in. I thought aboiut it, and decided it would be.
IH:EOD : What is the most intriguing aspect of the book from an
artistic standpoint?
RG: the fact that I would get to illustrate a different world and
society--from a fantasy point of view which I had really never done
before in comics. I wanted to approach the 'Silver Surfer' that
way but never had the chance. Its more creative I suppose, when
your drawing a world straight from your imagination.
IH:EOD : There are no skyscrapers in this book but rather a foreign
planet with strange creatures, ready for the change?
RG: Yeah I think so!
IH:EOD : Had you read the Planet Hulk storyline before signing
up? What did you think of it?
RG: I read the World War Hulk--and loved it. Hadn't read the Planet
Hulk stuff, but it seems like Greg Pak knows what hes doing!
IH:EOD : Will you be creating any new creatures for the book?
RG: Yes.
IH:EOD : Have you already started talking to Greg Pak about the
book? Any interesting info you can share with us?
RG: Yes I've spoken with him, nothing I can share as of yet.
IH:EOD : Any cosmic characters you hope Greg Pak will bring into
the book? <
RG: Well I've expressed interest in having the Surfer make his
way to skaars world. That would be a cool meeting indeed...
IH:EOD : You said in another interview that the Incredible Hulk
was one of your favorite books to work on. Why is that?<
RG: Hey, hes a gigantic big green monster. I think I always had
a fascination with whos the strongest, or the best or the baddest.
Its the same in real life. I love competition in martial arts, boxing,
basketball--team sports. I cant wait to watch the guy who blows
everybodys doors in.
IH:EOD : Since you can’t work on the Skaar book all the time,
what do you do in your free time?
RG: Play with my son, my daughter, hike my dog, write music and
train in Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai.
IH:EOD : Going to make it to any conventions this year?
RG: the New York Comic Con, Baltimore. Maybe something sandwiched
in between.
IH:EOD : A lot of people are interested in how you are going to
draw the character. Since you haven’t started on the book
yet to show the artwork, care to do a quick sketch for the interview?
RG: Ill attach an unfinished rough I did.....
