This issue of the Hulk is a House of M tie-in
A woman is painting white paint on Bruce's chest as an unseen person
talks to him. The person mentions that Bruce's totem has been chosen
and it is the snake, which represents power, charm and the drive
to learn among other things. The person asks if the totem satisfies
him. Bruce responds that his satisfaction does not matter and it
is what it is. The scene pulls back showing a tribe of Aborigines
and the elder leader says that Bruce has learned well and is on
the path to becoming one of the true people. Suddenly the tribe
leader stops and Bruce asks if there is a problem. The leader tells
Bruce to listen with his heart and Bruce takes a second and hears
a number of people who have come.
The man explains that the ones who are here are not of concern
as they flee oppressors and they can sympathize with them. The people
don't know that their oppressors are coming however. At the camp,
Scorpion tells her mother via a wrist-com that people from as far
as Sydney have come to be safe. Scorpion's mom tells her that she
is in a sub in the ocean off Australia. Scorpion tells how in Australia,
humans are being rounded up into internment camps. Scorpion mentions
how AIM is doing good work there by showing humans that they don't
have to just take the mutant oppression. Suddenly she feels what
seems like an earthquake which do not happen in this area of Australia
and figures they have company. Adam comes running to tell Scorpion
that the mutants are coming and says that he thought that they would
not come this far into the outback. Scorpion replies that bullies
are never satisfied and keep on coming. Out of the woods, comes
an army of mutant soldiers and while the human refugees run, the
AIM soldiers grab their weapons and fire at the mutants.
Bruce asks the tribe leader if he will despise him once he sees
his "other mind". The tribe leader says that Bruce is
one of the tribe now and despising Bruce would be despising themselves.
Besides, the mutant soldiers have entered a sacred place. The soldiers
catch one of the refugees when Bruce confronts them. One of the
soldiers mentions that they were not supposed to mess with the aborigines
but the head soldier doesn't care. Bruce throws the boomarang but
the lead soldier, Unus the Untouchable, just puts up his force shield
and deflects it. Bruce tells him he is making a mistake but Unus
just comes and pushes Bruce into the water as crocodiles come after
him. The Hulk suddenly appears and throws a bunch of crocs at the
soldiers. Unus puts up his shield and says it will take a lot more
than that to get through the shield. The Hulk just slams his palms
together and hurts Unus's ears. The Hulk comes up and Unus puts
up his shield just as the Hulk kicks him away.
Back in the battle, Scorpion is fighting the human soldiers working
for the mutants, asking them how they can be attacking fellow humans.
Scorpion knocks a few of the soldiers out when a soldier in a giant
battle suit steps up. Just then, Unus comes flying down in his shield
bubble and hits the battle suit. The Hulk comes jumping in right
behind him and Scorpion tells her mother what she sees. The Hulk
lands and asks who attacked his people. The refugees point to the
soldiers and the Hulk attacks them. Scorpions mother, Dr. Rappaccini,
orders for a shuttle so that she can get to the scene and take advantage
of the Hulk being there and exploiting him to the fullest potential.
Back at the mutant base in Sydney, Pyro is trying to tell Exodus
that they have a major problem now that the Hulk is there. Pyro
reminds Exodus that Magneto told them to leave the Aborigines alone
and now look what has happened. Exodus sends Pyro flying, trying
to remind him to respect him. He tells Pyro that they must eradicate
all the humans and provide model for the future.
Dr. Rappaccini tells the Hulk that AIM is the last, best hope for
humans and that in the next one to two centuries, humans will eventually
be gone. Suddenly, Dr. Issacs comes rushing in and says that his
son Aaron has been kidnapped by the soldiers. Dr. Rappaccini tells
him that it will be alright now that the Hulk is fighting alongside
them and then she notices that the Hulk is leaping away.
Bruce walks up to the top of a mountain to talk to the tribe leader.
The leader mentions that he and the Hulk are the same person, which
Bruce just can not accept. The old man mentions that AIM wants Bruce
to go with them to help root out the oppressors and to change things.
Bruce doesn't know what to do. The old man mentions that he has
been walking in the dreamtime and it has not felt right because
he realized that they were currently already in the dreamtime (meaning
House of M) and it was not right. He wasn't sure if Bruce going
with them would fix things but that is something Bruce must learn
for himself. Bruce tells the old man he has never been happier in
his life than here in the tribe. The old man tells him that perhaps
it is time for the snake to begin his crawl toward awakening.
